The return of Red Devil football

And ain't THAT good news? Got this email as the 2005 school year started...

My name is Jim DeSantis and I was recently appointed as the Head football coach at Flushing high school. I am very interested in learning all I can about the history of Flushing football. I am in the process of setting up a website, www.flushingfootball.com with an alumni section. I would love for the members of your site to visit the football site. Feel free to sign the guestbook as well as the alumni questionaire.

Coach DeSantis comes to FHS after 13 years at Bayside High School. We're glad he finally saw the light. Make sure you get out your FHS gear and put aside some Saturday mornings to cheer on the guys at Memorial Field {which has been refurbished and looks terrific}

A published author

Paul Tambrino, class of 54, tells us about his book in print...

As you know, for the past several years I have been writing a newspaper column to supply brief, yet adequate and reliable answers to a great number of popular questions about biblical and theological issues. The process of writing the book included selecting those questions that were the most frequently asked and particularly those that have been persistently asked through the years. I am pleased to inform you that ASK AUGUSTINE is now available in a book and is available at 25,000 bookstores, including 2,500 Christian bookstores plus online from xulonpress.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, Borders.com, and BarnesandNoble.com.

Subway news {accent on Sub}

Don Ryerson, class of 61, told us about this story about the subway, complete with a photo of a car from the 7 line when it ran back in 1622.

FHS Grad on TV

OK, he's not on TV at the moment but Richard Brown, class of 60, had a nice run on AMC with his show Movies 101. It was similar to Bravo's Inside The Actor's Studio but without the beard and the pretentiousness. The show has had its run but Richard is conducting it as a live class at NYU. Check out the website and get yourself some culture.

Fame - I wanna live forever...

Fay Sharit, class of 72, let's us know about celebrity life...

I'd just like to let my classmates know that if they think they see me in the film Spellbound (nominated for an Academy Award in the documentary category)  they're right.  Harry Altman, one of the featured spellers in the film is my son.  The movie {is out} on DVD.  You can see how I look all these years later (well at least in l999 when the film was actually filmed.)

The Kitchen Sink

Remember gorging yourself on on one of those delectably sloppy messes at Jahn's? Well they're not in Flushing anymore but you can still find them in Jamaica and on the internet at www.jahnsicecream.com. And in case you were wondering, these days a Kitchen Sink goes for $40.

Yearbooks, anyone?

The school has some extras, available for $30 plus postage. Call the school at 718-888-7500 and ask for Elvis Hanif. Here's the most recent list of years available:

1974 1978 1981 1984 1987 1990 1993 1996 2001
1976 1979 1982 1985 1988 1991 1994 1997 2002

FHS on the internet...

Flushing High School has posted their official web page and it looks terrific. You can see it at www.flushinghighschool.org.

Edward Bleeker fans, pay attention...

A lot of FHS graduates went to JHS 185 and spent all those years wondering who Edward Bleeker was. I never wondered until now but my curiosity finally got the best of me. I'm not sure how I'd feel being proclaimed "The Appendectomy King of Flushing," but it's better than the things they used to call me when I was student there. Read the story here.

Ladies and gentlemen of the chorus...

We recently heard from Dr. Ken Gartner, familiar to the members of the chorus during the 1990's...

I was the Music Director from 9/91 to 7/99.  We produced what some said was the premier choral program in the city.  I would be interested in hearing from all former chorus members and music students as well as any faculty that remembers those times:  Messiah, Brahms and Mozart's Requiae, Creation, all with orchestra of about 250 singers.

He followed up with another couple of emails about his web page, www.virtuosos.org...

...  The chorus that I am conducting in College Point is the St. Paul's College Singers and we recently performed the entire MESSIAH--a rather rare occurrence these days, I'm afraid.

{I've} formed the Kenneth Gartner Singers which meets on Tuesdays, 7:30-9:30 PM, Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 42-15 165th Street in Flushing, just South of Northern Blvd.  ALL interested singers are welcome, of course, but many of the present membership in the chorale are from my classes in Flushing
.

Here's an update from October 12, 2004...

Nora and I are moving to San Rafael, California.  I have taken a position with the Marin School of the Arts as their Choral and Vocal Director.  I am also responsible for the Music in Music theater.  There are some other things out there for me, too, but they are still unofficial.  I shall let you know if they come about.

The School is 2 years old with an enrollment of 200.  It expects 140 new students next September.  It is a great opportunity and I shall have a great deal of fun:  I already spent about 10 days with the kids, getting to know them and having them get to know me.

Please let us know if you are going to be in the San Francisco area.  Simply write us.  Many of you know I would visit my dad who was an architect in San Francisco every 3 years, regularly, so I am somewhat familiar with things.

You can email Dr. G. at astrologue@aol.com.

J2K

Only our old pal and teacher Jerry Freedman could rate his own headline like that. Since his name has been thrown around the message boards, he's come out of hiding, found us and attended a reunion party or two in New York. Sent a picture of himself and the family and the scoop on what he's been doing since he left FHS. Take a look and drop him a note.
