Jerry Freedman

Those of us fortunate enough to be in Flushing High School sometime in the 60's or 70's remember Mr. Freedman and his social studies classes fondly. Happily, we've found him, pictured here with wife Linda and their three grandchildren. Here's what he had to say:

I taught Social Studies at Flushing High School from 1963-1978. After leaving Flushing, I moved to Los Angeles, where I married, and helped my wife raise her three children. I have been teaching all of these years out here. For the past 15 years I have been the chairman of the Social Studies Department of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, located on the campus of Cal State L.A.

I have been fortunate enough to win a number of teacher awards. (thanks to the experiences I had at F.H.S.). I am a consultant for the Grammys' Leonard Bernstein Foundation, and travel the country during the summer working with teachers to incorporate the arts in all grade levels, and all subjects. I have remained in touch with a few of my former students from F.H.S., and would love to be in touch with any others so inclined. I visit New York twice a year (which means 46 times since I left!).

And some more in a note from December 2007...

This past spring I was given a teaching award by Claes Nobel, the patriarch of the Nobel Family (no money involved). The event took place at UC Santa Barbara. I had the opportunity to speak to an audience of Nobel Prize winners, high school honor students, and their parents.

Al Pacino was looking for a "Jewish Elder" for a movie he was directing about Salome {webmaster's note: The movie is entitle Salomaybe}. He chose me! Once picture is of me in costume in the desert. The other is of me and Pacino after filming the scenes.
